Nova Titan Invitational

The Nova Debate Team cordially invites you to attend the 2018 Titan Invitational, held at Nova High School on October 6th. The Titan Invitational will offer quality competition in three debate categories:  Lincoln Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, and Congressional Debate, as well as excellent fields in six Individual Events: Mixed Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, Oral Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Program Oral Interpretation! As in years past, we are privileged to offer bids to the Tournament of Champions in both Congressional Debate (Finals), Public Forum Debate (semifinalists) and we are an Individual Event qualifier (based upon the number of entries.) Please join us for a weekend filled with outstanding competition and superb hospitality- and then a travel/rest day!

Events

Novice and Varsity divisions in Lincoln Douglas Debate, Program Oral Interpretation, and Duo Interpretation will be offered, if entries warrant. We will no longer offer Oral Interpretation. All events will follow NSDA rules with the exception of Oral Interpretation, which will adhere to CFL rules.

 

❏      Congressional Debate will have shorter sessions with smaller chambers!!!

❏      Extemp competitors will be allowed access to the internet for prep.  No live communication is permitted.

❏      Wireless information will be given at registration and in the prep room.

 

LD and PF will use the October Topic This will be great preparation for students competing at other National competitions this year.

 

Strikes

Limited strikes will be available in PF.  They will be due Thursday, October 4th, by 5PM.

 

Rounds/Elimination Rounds

In Public Forum Debate, teams are guaranteed five preliminary rounds but we have provided six every year! It is our goal to hold five preliminary rounds in both Policy Debate and Lincoln-Douglas Debate, if entries warrant. Additionally, Policy Debate and Lincoln-Douglas Debate will break to Quarters; Public Forum Debate will advance to Double-Octofinals. In Individual Events, students are guaranteed five prelim rounds, breaking to Semis. Congressional Debate will have three preliminary sessions and break to Semi Finals. 

 

Entry Limits

Initially, six entries in each Individual Event, LD and CX will be accepted. In Congressional Debate schools are allowed ten entries. In PF, schools will be granted eight teams initially; and all remaining entries will be waitlisted. In the event that your entries are waitlisted, we will remove your students as soons as space is available. Double entry is allowed in speech events (no triple entry) only.

 

Entry Deadlines:

This website will begin accepting entries on August 24th. The deadline for entering competitors September 27th. All late entries, thereafter, should be emailed to the tournament director at Courtney.Chipman@browardschools.com.

 

Judges

Please bring 1 trained judge for every 5 entries in Individual Events, 1 trained judge for every 2 entries in LD/CX/ PF; if you have congress entries: include 1 trained judge for 5 debaters in Congressional debate.

 

On Tournament Day

To facilitate a prompt, fair tournament, we will follow this procedure:

At 7:00 AM, in the Media Center, we will open registration. Coaches will have an area to submit fees and meal tickets will be disseminated, along with copies of codes, ballots, etc. Judges will also need to check into the Media Center.

Special Note: Registration is not the time to report drops. If you have drops on Friday morning, please call 754-323-1759 or text, 954-903-8840; please be clear which name and event is to be eliminated.

 

Students will be directed to go to the auditorium upon arrival. Please see to it that someone from the school is there with them. Please do not arrive later than 7:30 as we will start Extemp Draw, and Round One promptly at 8:00.

On Saturday, Extemp Draw and judge call will begin promptly at 7:30 AM!! Fines will be assessed for judges that miss  judge call.

 

Students and Coaches should enter Nova High School along College Avenue. There will be a member of our Security Staff and Nova Debate Students directing cars. There is an SAT that will take place on our campus that day too, so we are asking that everyone stays away from the high school portable area.

 

Directions:

From the Southwest, take 826N to I75E to I595E - exit University Drive. Proceed south to Nova Drive.  Turn Left.  Continue to College Ave.  Turn right and school will be on your left.  From the Southeast, take I95N to I595W.  Proceed to Davie Road.  Take Davie Road to Nova Drive, turn right.  Turn left on College Ave.  School will be on your left.  From the North, take I95 or Sawgrass to I595 and follow directions above.   Parking will be available in the front lots (facing College Ave., or the back lot, facing  39th  St.

Fees

$40 per IE, Congressional Debate or LD entry ($10 for a second event.) $80 Duo team.  $80 for a PF team. These fees include lunch Saturday for each competitor. Please make all checks payable to "Nova Debate."

 

Hired Judges

Hired IE judges are available for a cost of $100; in any debate division, judges cost $125 for one day. Please provide adequate notice for debate hired judges. Please make all checks payable to "Nova Debate".

 

 

 

Drops

Drops occurring after September 30th will forfeit entry fee.  Drops occurring after October 2nd will incur an additional $20 drop fee.  Day of tournament drops will incur a $50 drop fee.

 

Food: 

On Saturday, students will be served Asian cuisine (with vegetarian accommodations.)There will also be concessions available.

 

Please do not forget to order meals for your judges. Judge's lunches are $7, and as always, will be an endless buffet!
